Books and Passages

The Role of Books and Passages

ReadWorks provides over 1,000 non-fiction passages for grades 2-6 (see the list)

  • Questions for each passage are aligned to essential skills and strategies.

  • Reading passages feature vocabulary and definitions.

  • Students read a variety of non-fiction topics to build background knowledge.

Each K-4 lesson is based on a read-aloud book (see the list)

  • Lessons are based on our recommended book.

  • ReadWorks also provides a list of other popular books that will work well for the lesson.

  • Read-aloud books are crucial in teaching reading comprehension. It is the only way for students to acquire more sophisticated vocabulary, background knowledge, and textual understanding, especially for those students who cannot yet read with fluency.

Each 5-6 lesson is part of a novel unit  (see the list)

  • Multiple skills and strategies are taught within each 5-6 novel unit.

  • Novel levels are provided using the Fountas and Pinnell and Lexile leveling systems, so that students can engage with texts at their reading level.

  • Novel units are categorized by genre.

"Your website is AWESOME! I'm so glad to have the use of it. I love the fact that you can see the Common Core alignment with each lesson.

This will definitely help me get my reading lessons in order. I like the differentiation help included in the lessons also. I am definitely going to tell my colleagues about your site!!! They will cherish it! Thank you!"
