Read-Aloud Lesson Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt Students will identify Clara’s main goal and the steps she takes to achieve it. Students will then discuss what traits make people successful at achieving their goals.
Paired Text Questions "Debate: Better Late than Never?" and Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt Integrate information from the non-fiction reading passage "Debate: Better Late Than Never?" and the non-fiction text Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt to write or speak more knowledgeably about American slavery and its effects.

I just finished this close read and found it to be an excellent springboard for discussing slavery and peoples attitudes in confederate states. ReadWorks is a great resource for any Literacy program. I use it exclusively for my reading instruction.

This is one of my favorite books that I use when teaching about the underground railroad. Glad I found this lesson to add to my unit.
