Build Background Knowledge

The legend of Maniac says that he is most famous for running. Build background knowledge for this unit by introducing your students to information about the sport of running. Running is internationally known as "Track and Field." According to some historians, specialists in history, track and field was the only sport for the first 13 games of the Olympics. Originally, the men wore military armor while participating in the event. Track and field is still a major sport in the Olympics, with women also participating in competitive races for the gold. Track and field is not limited to long distance running; relays, marathons, high jump, long jump, triple jump, pole vault, discus throw, javelin throw, and hammer throws are just some of the other events in the category. Explain to your students about some of the events, and share profiles of famous runners such as Florence Joyner and Michael Johnson. Also, explain that running is not just for Olympic athletes. Thousands of people take part in marathons in major U.S. cities every year. A marathon is a race in which people run 26.2 miles. Show photographs from a marathon in a city or area near you.

What is the Concept of Comprehension that the students record on the linesnext o the comprehension questions? I am havng trouble finding it on the site.
Hi Robyn, sorry for the confusion. The Concepts of Comprehension are just another name for the Skill/Strategies taught throughout the site. A full list of them and their abbreviations can be found here: http://www.readworks.org/lessons/skill-strategy-definitions
I found your website via Pinterest and I'm teaching the Maniac Magee unit right now. I thought that I'd point out that on page 9 of the student packet (comp questions ch 6 - 14) problem number 6 is a multiple choice answer, but a. and b. are blank. Also I am getting ready to teach Lesson 1: Relationships and in the accompanying student worksheet they are to use relationships off of a Relationship Strip. Do you have some examples that you could include? You cover the 2 main ones in the I and WE parts. Thank you, so far the unit has been excellent. Both myself and my students are enjoying it.
Hi Amanda, Thanks for the head's up. We have made the correction to the Student Packet. As far as the Independent Practice question, you can refer to the Student Packet Answer Key.
Thank you.
I absolutely love this unit!!!
Can I get a list of the vocabulary by section?
Where do I find the novels / passages?
Thanks Jamie, I had the same question but now I have found the packets.
Where do I find the Student packet?
Hi Jamie, The Student Packet is the first item available in the 'Teacher & Student Materials' section of this page.
