Dorothy's home state of Kansas is a place that is famous for its tornadoes. Build background knowledge for this unit by teaching your students the science of tornadoes. Tornados are violent storms that can be very dangerous. They appear as funnel-shaped thunderstorms, moving through the air at speeds reaching 300 miles per hour. This is why some people call tornadoes "twisters." Show pictures of twisters to your class. Explain that when tornadoes touch down, they can destroy and lift anything in their path. Tornadoes can happen anywhere, but most happen in "Tornado Alley," the area between the Rocky Mountains and the Appalachian Mountains. Show this area on your map of the United States. Explain that most people living in Tornado Alley have cellars, or underground areas in their homes, schools, and workplaces, where they can go if a tornado is approaching.
