Lesson 4 Predicting a Mystery’s Solution Predict the solution to a mystery based on what they know about character motivation and possible clues.

Build Background Knowledge

Build background knowledge for this unit by introducing Johannes Vermeer to your class. Explain that Vermeer was a Dutch painter. He lived in the Netherlands. Show students a map of the Netherlands. You may also want to show photographs of the windmills and wooden clogs that are common images of old Dutch culture. Explain that Vermeer was famous for his paintings of people doing ordinary tasks (house scenes), his use of transparent color (color you can see through), and light. Share some of Vermeer's paintings with the class and read more about Vermeer in the Textual Analysis passage for this unit.
