Before starting the book, explain to your students that Kek, the main character of Home of the Brave, is a "refugee." That means that he escaped the war in his home country, and is being given shelter and safety by another host country. There are more than 13 million refugees in the world. Build background knowledge for this unit by introducing your students to the war Kek escaped—the war in Sudan. Show students where Sudan is located on your map of Africa. Explain that the war in Sudan is a civil war, which means Sudanese have formed rebel forces to challenge and overthrow the government. The Lost Boys of Sudan are a group of young boys who lost their families in the war. They traveled, mostly by foot, across Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Uganda looking for their families and a safe place to stay. Some charities in the United States have offered to take care of the Lost Boys.

What are the vocabulary words in Part 2? I don't see anything that tells which word is actually the word from the book. Thank you!

Great question. If you look at the Vocabulary section of Lesson 2, you'll see that the five vocabulary words for Part 2 are: offended, inquiry, intimidated, depressed, cringe
