Build background knowledge for this unit by introducing your students to the game of chess. Chess is a game that dates back over a thousand years ago. Introduce the rules and pieces of chess for your class. Explain that most people agree that Bobby Fischer may have been the greatest chess player of all time. Bobby was a chess champion by age 15, when he left school to focus on chess full-time. He is famous for winning chess games with amazing scores. In 1963, he won the U.S. Chess Tournament with a score of 11-0, the only perfect score in the history of the tournament. He also became the 11th World Chess Champion in 1972. Bobby Fischer soon stopped playing chess and left the United States. His legacy inspired the film, Searching for Bobby Fischer. He is still alive and rumor has it, he plays online under a pseudonym, or fake name.
