Only You Can Save Mankind takes place in 1991, against the backdrop of the Gulf War. The war was playing on T.V. in Johnny's household, and it appeared more and more like his video game. Build background knowledge for this unit by introducing your students to the Gulf War. Explain that in 1990, Saddam Hussein, the President of Iraq, invaded a nearby country, Kuwait. Show students where Iraq and Kuwait are located on a map. Explain that this area is called the Persian Gulf. Tell students that in 1990, Saddam Hussein refused to leave Kuwait, so American troops led an international military action to drive Iraqi forces from the country. U.S. troops were stationed in a neighboring country, Saudi Arabia, and the efforts to defeat Iraq were known as Operation Desert Storm. In the end, Kuwait was liberated or freed from Iraqi forces.
