Build Background Knowledge

Build background knowledge for this unit by introducing your students to mummies. Show where Egypt is on your world map, and explain that it was very important for Ancient Egyptians to preserve a body after a person died. The process of preserving a body is called mummification. When a person died, it was believed that their soul went on a journey through the underworld. That person was believed to stand before the god Osiris, who judged whether they were good or bad during their lifetime. If a person was good, their soul could reunite with their body. For this reason, preserving the human body as perfectly as possible was very important. If the body and soul were reunited, it was important to have a whole body to return to. For more in-depth information about the mummification process, see the Textual Analysis passage in the unit.
