Learning Goal
Integrate information from the fiction passage “In the Night” and the book Good-Night, Owl! to develop their ability to make inferences and compare characters across different texts.

Part 1: "In the Night"
 
Read the passage “In the Night” out loud to your students. Alternatively, students can read the passage independently or as a group.
 
Question 1: Who or what is asleep in this story?
 
Sample student answer (responses may vary in wording but should resemble the following): Everyone but the teller of the story is asleep.
 
Question 2: When do the events in the passage take place? Support your answer with information from the story.
 
Sample student answer: Responses may vary but should recognize that the events in the passage take place at night. Students may cite such clues as everyone except the speaker being asleep.
 
Part 2: Good-Night, Owl!
 
Question 3: What time does Owl try to sleep?
 
Sample student answer: Owl tries to sleep in the day.
 
Question 4: Does Owl sleep at night? Support your answer with information from the book.
 
Sample student answer: Responses may vary, as long as they are supported by the book. For example, students may respond that Owl does not sleep at night. Owl is awake at night when the other animals go to sleep and tries to sleep during the day. Alternatively, students could respond that Owl might sleep at night. Because Owl has not been able to get any rest during the day, Owl may try to make up for this lack of sleep at night.
 
Part 3: "In the Night" and Good-Night, Owl!
 
Question 5: How are Owl and the character telling the story of “In the Night” alike?
 
Sample student answer (responses may vary in wording but should resemble the following): Owl and the teller of “In the Night” are alike because they are awake when others go to sleep.
 
Question 6: Owl and the character telling the story of “In the Night” are both awake when others go to sleep. Owl tries to sleep during the day. When might the character telling the story of “In the Night” try to sleep? Explain your answer.
 
Sample student answer: Responses may vary. Students may respond that the teller of “In the Night” might try to sleep during the day, just like Owl. Alternatively, students may respond that the teller of “In the Night” could simply go to sleep later in the night.
