Gaspard at the Seashore

will explain that understanding where a story takes place helps us understand the story better. Where a story takes place is part of the setting. I will provide concrete examples of settings. (The setting of our class is the classroom.) I will model thinking about where Gaspard at the Seashore by Anne Gutman takes place by looking at the title and front of the book. I will model using pictures and explicit text to determine where the story takes place by reading pages 1–6 aloud. On the inside cover of the book there is a picture of blue water and brown sand. There are also trees, houses and mountains off in the distance. The book looks like it takes place at the beach.
TIP: Students at this age will find identifying “when” a story takes place to be challenging. Therefore, it is important to teach “when” and “where” separately before teaching them together.
Ask: "How did I decide where the story is taking place?" Students should respond that you looked at the pictures and looked for clues in the text to determine where the story is taking place.

Before teaching the lesson, explain that you are going to read a story about a character who wants to learn about windsurfing. Windsurfing is one kind of water sport. When you windsurf, you stand on a surfboard in water and a giant piece of cloth on a pole called a "sail" catches the wind and holds you up. Other water sports include surfing, sailing, fishing, skiing, swimming, and diving. Share pictures of some of these water sports, or imitate their actions with your class.
