After going over the passage I feel that this question is expecting students to draw inferences based on evidence in paragraph 1 (" African American artists, musicians, and writers were pouring into this updown Manhattan neighborhood." (RI.5.1) Teachers may also discuss the name of the club, Cotton Club, and infer that possibly its patrons were white (paragraph 2) (this may be stretching it a bit), also that theperformers at this club were black. There need to be a lot of inferences made drawing in evidence from facts within passages. Note that students have to use evidence from the passage.
I think you are correct about using evidence from the first paragraph where it states that the artists, musicians and writers were African Americans. It also states that the performers were black and that "most" of the patrons were white. So the logical question for students to ask is why would a lot of white patrons go to a club that had black performers? And based on the passage, it would seem to point to the new type of music all these new musicians were bringing with them to the city. The patrons must have come to hear the jazz music because it was new and different to them.
The suggested answer to question 7 is wrong. The question states "Based on the passage" but there is nothing in the passage that mentions rights or equality.
